One of the highlights of my trip to the beautiful city of Amsterdam was viewing this painting "The Kitchen Maid"by Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum. It is exquisite. Besides revealing an intimate setting in a typical genre painting, the colors are incredible.Paintings from the past and present are excellent sources for the creation of an interior color palette. The masters had a pretty good handle on color, wouldn't you say, presenting harmonious combinations of colors used in just the right proportions.
Here's a detail of the dress's bodice. Notice the red stitching woven through that expertly ties in with the red pitcher.
There is a beautiful modulation between the blues and the greens of the sleeves. Such a delicate passage.
And finally, this red pitcher in the middle of the composiiton, pulls the whole piece together. Red is always so impactful, especially when applied sparingly.

Beautiful! And those shadows are so incredible, aren't they? Showing that a single color is never really seen as a single color...

The details are amazing and the colors really stand out agains the muted gray background, it's nice that she had something so bright to wear given her job. I've always loved the old Dutch painters and their ability to translate what they saw with such clarity and beauty.
