Should Art Match Your Sofa?

Should art match your sofa? If it's mine it should. But it should also match your soul.

One of my recent Etsy customers was kind enough to send me pictures of her new acquisition, one of my creations entitled "Nisqually", showing its new home. This is what she included in her email. "Thought you'd like to see your baby in her new home. We love it! Not only are the colors perfect, but it has so much meaning for us. We spent our 40th anniversary last year hiking there and have paddled our kayaks all through the Nisqually reach".
(We will keep an eye on your Web site for more great works of art.)
All the best -- and safe travels.

Just as with all my color consulting clients, so far, all of my Etsy transactions have been soulful. It's truly a community. Thank you, Carol. You not only helped bankroll my trip to Amsterdam, truly a dream come true, but you nourished my spirit as well. And isn't that what it's all about?

The Golden Age

One of the highlights of my trip to the beautiful city of Amsterdam was viewing this painting "The Kitchen Maid"by Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum. It is exquisite. Besides revealing an intimate setting in a typical genre painting, the colors are incredible.

Paintings from the past and present are excellent sources for the creation of an interior color palette. The masters had a pretty good handle on color, wouldn't you say, presenting harmonious combinations of colors used in just the right proportions.

Here's a detail of the dress's bodice. Notice the red stitching woven through that expertly ties in with the red pitcher.

There is a beautiful modulation between the blues and the greens of the sleeves. Such a delicate passage.

And finally, this red pitcher in the middle of the composiiton, pulls the whole piece together. Red is always so impactful, especially when applied sparingly.

In 3-D

I have been delighted by these colorful, historical stucco reliefs inset in the building facades. They are everywhere. Here is just a sampling.

The Jordaan

I've decided I'm going to move here. I love bikes. Everyone sits up so straight and no one wears a helmet.
I love canals with teal houseboats.
And I especially love giant yellow water spickets overhead.

First Day in Amsterdam

After eighteen hours of getting here, a gritty eyed american traveler walked out of the Centraal train station in Amsterdam and was catapulted into this beautiful city.

Embracing my inner tightwad, I opted to walk to my apartment which was less than 2 kilometers away instead of taking a cab, my luggage heavily bearing its namesake behind me. Thank you Google maps, you are amazing. It was well worth it- good visuals greeted me in every nook and cranny.

As I walked across the cobbles, catching occasional whiffs of hashish smoke and dodging one thousand speeding cyclists. I wondered, would my apartment really be there? Does this place I found on Craislist really exist?

Lo and behold, not only was it there,

but my name was on door buzzer.

The stairs are almost a complete vertical climb.

The Mondrianesque floor pattern in the landing is very cool.

It's starting off to be a very good visit. Now it's time to take off my shoes and rest awhile.
